Mae Helene Bacon Boggs arrived in Shasta in 1871. She married Angus Boggs in 1899. In her later years, she was the primary force behind the restoration of the Shasta Courthouse Museum at Shasta State Historic Park. She was also instrumental in urging the government to select "Shasta" as the name for what is now Shasta Dam and Shasta Lake. Authored the book "My Playhouse was a Concord Coach: An Anthology of Newspaper Clippings and Documents Relating to Those Who Made California History During the Years 1822-1888."

Ms. Boggs has been called "the greatest benefactress" of Western Star Lodge No. 2 for her generous donation of a quarter section of land near Shasta to the lodge. The property was sold in the 1970s and the proceeds invested to ensure the Lodge's future.

Ms. Boggs died in her San Francisco residence in 1963.
