Excelsior Hall (on the right).
Built in 1857. Located on the top floor of R.J. Walsh's rebuilt fireproof brick building at Shasta. Excelsior Hall became known as Armory Hall during the Civil War and served as a storage place for guns and ammunition for Shasta's Union volunteer company. Because the volunteers feared their arsenal would be stolen by the Knights of the Golden Circle, a secret society that supported the southern states, the arsenal was stealthily moved across the street to an upstairs room in Joseph Isaacs' store. Town meetings, many theatrical shows, grand balls, and Fourth of July celebrations were also held in the building. Purchased by Daniel P. Bystle in 1876.[1] The building was condemned in 1935 by Deputy District Attorney Ira M. Shadwell in the name of public safety. [2]It was razed sometime later, and its ruins are still visible immediately to the east of the Hall of Western Star today.
